C&binet comment: Ben Bradshaw, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
The creative economy is the subject of the next webchat to be hosted on the Number 10 website, and I’ll be answering questions live between 3 and 4pm next Monday afternoon (5th October).
The c&binet community are, of course, very welcome to submit questions – the Number 10 webchat is open to everyone – or you can do so through this blog. It’s vital we have the debate in full swing before we even start the first sessions of the c&binet forum event in just a few weeks time. I see the Number 10 webchat as a particular chance to get a feel for the issues that are front of mind for a digital-savvy general public audience – whether that’s the future of the BBC, unlawful filesharing, local news or creative jobs. Whichever directions the questions come from, they will be a welcome part of the build up to the c&binet forum.

Apart from the 8 years I served as a Marine Commando every other weekend in the last 43 years has been dedicated to performing in public houses, clubs, bike shows and at private parties as either a one man act guitarist vocalist or with bands duo’s or trios all over the globe, I look at the sad state of music in UK pubs today since the Labour party introduced the smoking ban, plus all the other rules and regulations, cheap beer in supermarkets and many pubs I performed at regularly are literally dying a death and I for sure get a great feeling of ITS THE END OF THE LINE for us pub musos to make a living out of it thanks to Labour, so on a rough estimate for all the butts that I have kept on seats drinking alcohol at all the venues I have performed at I reckon the tax revenue I have made the IR comes to around £250,000 - 300,000 email me at and Ill give you an address for your government to send me the cheque, I fancy offskay to Spain again. Interesting - I would really like to see the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills answering some of these questions. I would like to know how the creative industries will be supported and the efforts made to link in to mainstream business support.
How do the 2 departments link and what infrastructural support is on the horizon
How do we compete with low cost overseas sourced creatives

“I read that most of the UK’s creative businesses, like mine, are made up of 3 people or less, but have found large government regional and industry quangos to be remote. How can the government have a discussion with this dynamic new section of industry which don’t have pr or communications departments with budgets dedicated to influencing government policy makers.“
